Rev War Drums - Civil War Drums

Rope-Tuned Drums for every period

Heritage Drum Company

Thank you for your interest in Heritage Drums. We offer professional period reproductions and service, specializing in rope tension drums. Terry Cornett, handcrafts each instrument on a custom order basis, drawing on his 30 years of experience in drum manufacturing and repair. Historical authenticity is assured by on-going research. These rugged instruments are built to be played, though their beauty will enhance the finest "War Room" or museum display.

Heritage Drums are currently being used by Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactors, Renaissance troubadours and trouvères, theatrical troupes, college and secondary school instructors, modern drum corps and drumming enthusiasts, Nationwide.

Customize your drum

Create your own instrument by customizing the appearance. Drum hoops were customarily scarlet (sometimes called Spanish Red) in color and the shells were left natural or stained dark walnut. We can change hoop color (blue, clear finish . . .etc.) or even add stripes. Many British drums incorporate a hoop of red and blue with a white "Worm" meandering around the outside surface. Other European drums use a banded stripe of opposing colors (often black and white) that run obliquely across the hoop. See our Standard Features.

Other decoration to consider would be hand-painted artwork or fancy tackwork heraldry. We have engaged an award winning artist to paint beautifully detailed reproductions and create new works from your ideas. The fancy tackwork can be supplied in period patterns by Eli Brown, Wm H. Horstmann and C. & F. Soistman, or you may wish to design your own. The tackwork is available facing front or centered on the snare strainer, where the cartouche pattern is most often used. It looks just like an Egyptian cartouche turned on end with the drum vent in its center and the snare strainer in the lower quadrant. See the Picture Gallery. In the meantime, click on the photo in the left frame for a larger image.

We are pleased to announce that since October of 1999, natural hemp has been our standard rope. For years this has been difficult to obtain. We now have a source that supplies the finest hemp rope from Transylvania, Romania. Industrial hemp has a muted olive/khaki color and smooth texture that is easy on the hands, yet provides the "grip" needed to hold tension. Stretching is minimal due to the long hemp fibers. We also offer cotton and 4-strand linen (flax) rope for those desiring whiter cordage. If authenticity is not a concern, the Dacron© polyester rope offers a "dress" white appearance and superior strength.

16, 18, 20, 24 and 26 inch drums available in 24" depths. 21 x 16 is a very popular snare model. 20 x 26 is also popular with Civil War units.

We also offer tab-style leather ears, as seen on the eagle drum in the above left photo, at no charge. While these are not as durable as the standard folded ear, they were very popular on drums throughout the 19th and into the 20th Century. Check out our low Prices.
